J.J. Berney is CEO and Founder of TriOaks Capital Management L.P., an alternative asset manager in New York focused on companies in the Communications, Media, Entertainment, and Consumer sectors. Prior to launching this business, J.J. spent 14 years in the financial services industry as a fundamental equity analyst and portfolio manager, most recently as a portfolio manager at Citadel Investment Group, one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers, where he spent eight years as a founding member of the firm’s Communications, Media, and Entertainment business. J.J.’s investing expertise focuses on companies in the media, entertainment, Internet, telecommunication services, gaming, lodging, and leisure industries. Before Citadel, J.J. was a Vice President in the Equity Research division of Goldman, Sachs, and Co., where he spent six years.
J.J. graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University with a BA in Politics (highest honors) and American Studies, where he was also inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergraduate, he was an active participant in campus life, serving in several leadership capacities at the college radio station, including as its general manager.
J.J. is Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Hannah Senesh Community Day School in Brownstone Brooklyn and chairs the school’s Endowment and Building Campaign. He is a member of the Media Council at the Paley Center for Media, a patron of BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), a Prospect Park Alliance Partner, a supporter of the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and is a member of the Park Slope Food Co-Op.
J.J. and his wife reside in Park Slope, Brooklyn with their three children.
